COLORADO CITY, Ariz. - According to published reports, including the Salt Lake Tribune, Warren Jeffs, the leader of the FLDS Church, has allegedly instructed his followers to stop paying their property taxes. That includes his followers in Colorado City, Ariz. and Hildale, Utah., who pay into the United Effort Plan.
According to Ron Nicholson, the Mohave County Assessor, the United Effort Plan is one of the largest taxpayers in Mohave County, and he has never before experienced a problem with the citizens of Colorado City. "If that thing went to lien, you can be sure there would be all kinds of investors up there, who basically are in the business of buying these tax things from clear across the country," said Nicholson. "And they would be buying that in a heartbeat, because they would figure somewhere down the road, somebody is going to pay off on those, and even if they didn't pay off, they would end up owning." He said he isn't scheduled to visit Colorado City for another nine months. Jeffs has reportedly told his followers not to pay taxes to the UEP this year, and when the taxman comes calling to "answer them nothing." Nicholson said in all probability the UEP court assigned fiduciary would pay the tax bill, even if the citizens there refused to contribute this year. |
